Though the owners-implemented lockout has shut down most of baseball’s usual offseason business, the Rays have added some pitching depth for the 2022 season, whenever it starts.
Teams still are allowed to sign free agents to minor-league contracts, which are not subject to the transactions freeze.
Chris Mazza and the Rays have agreed to a minor-league deal. Mazza, 32, pitched in 14 games during nine stints with the Rays in 2021, compiling a 4.61 ERA in a multi-inning relief role and collecting his first career save. He spent most of the season at Triple-A Durham, going 4-1, 3.16, after being acquired from Boston in a February trade.
