The Red Sox have had a busy last couple of hours. Prior to the club’s opening series game against the White Sox, the team announced they will call up reliever Kaleb Ort.
The 29-year-old Ort came to the Sox via the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft. Ort has appeared in 40 games with the WooSox posting a 3.12 ERA. The right-handed hurler has pitched in 43 1/3 innings with 59 strikeouts while converting 18 saves.
Kaleb Ort becomes the third Rule 5 player on the Red Sox roster
The promotion of Ort comes on the heels of the Sox dealing with another COVID-19 issue. Chris Sale was placed on the COVID-19 related injured list on Friday. Sale tested positive for the virus and will miss his next start on Sunday.
With the promotion of Ort, the Sox now have three former Rule 5 selections on their major league roster.
Reliever Garrett Whitlock and Ort were both taken in this years Rule 5 draft. The other player to land with the Sox this season is Raynel Espinal.
Furthermore, the 29-year-old Espinal was selected from the Yankees in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft back in 2019.
WooSox pitching coach very complimentary of Kaleb Ort
WooSox pitching coach Paul Abbott was very complimentary of Ort earlier this season.
“I see a guy who is excited to take the ball and he’s excited to compete,” WooSox pitching coach Paul Abbott said. “He knows what kind of pitcher he is and he has complete conviction in what he’s doing. He knows what he needs to get better in and he’s invested a lot of time in that too,” said Abbott.
The Red Sox begin a three game series against the White Sox in Chicago on Friday night.
